Typically, the start of the year sees a rise in gym attendance as the new year’s pledges to meet fitness goals appear at an all-time high. And while this may be the case at the beginning of the year, it’s likely an all-year-round focus on health and fitness is where success lies. And this starts with what we eat.
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not”. Galatians 6:7-9
If we apply, Galatians 6:7-9, which highlights reaping and sowing in relation to our diet then the food we eat today, determines the state of our health tomorrow. To put it simply, every bite we take impacts our future self. With this scripture in mind, the food we eat, is at its core, what fuels our body and impacts our health.

We cannot deny, there is much truth in that popular saying “we are what we eat”.
The cell theory
Last year, a woman of God, taught me about the cell theory. This is where good cellular health provides a solid foundation for physical health. It goes like this.
Our body is made up of cells.
And our cells make up the tissues in our body, such as the tissues found in the in the leg or arm.
Then these tissues make up an organ, like the brain or heart.
In turn, our organs support the body’s organism systems such as the neurological system. This applies to all our bodily organs.
And, the organism systems result in making up our body, which, finally makes you and me.

Learning the cell theory helps us to understand how health can be achieved on a deeper level. Basically, our cells are the foundation for our physical health. And this wisdom comes from understanding how our bodies operate at a cellular level.
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Proverbs 4:7

Knowing that healthy cells create the right environment for a healthy body is wise. Unhealthy cells impacted by, let’s say, too much sugar in the body is a breeding ground for sickness and disease.
For example, a diet high in carbohydrates and processed food increase the amount of sugar in the body. This can result in high levels of insulin, which is known to be the root cause of a plethora of diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure and even dementia.
Ultimately the cell theory teaches, that to have healthy cells, we must feed our cells with the right food. It’s what we eat that keeps our cells in the best condition. And eating God’s food is how we do this.
“Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things”. Genesis 9:3
God’s food
Any food grown in the ground or animal reared on the farm is defined as God’s food. Basically, it is food that is produced naturally, found in the following food groups: meat, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds.
The cell theory teaches food created by God for our consumption is the fuel that the body needs to thrive. It advises that if we eat God’s food, not only will it nourish and fuel our bodies – but healthy cell growth is also inevitable. And this leads to healthy tissues, then organs, which makes for well-functioning organism systems and bodies, and ultimately a healthier you.

The cell theory does not support a high consumption of junk food and ultra processed foods. It warns against eating foods that come in packets or boxes with a complex long list of ingredients, which are usually unrecognisable. Although often delicious to taste, the cell theory advises such foods should be avoided or only eaten occasionally if we want to achieve and/or maintain optimal health at a cellular level.
Keeping fit with food
Although exercise plays an important role in our health and fitness, trying to keep fit whilst taking a diet high in sugar and processed food, kind of defeats the purpose. Exercise has less impact if we have a bad diet. You need to improve or change your diet first and this way, an exercise regime will produce much better results.

Yet it can be difficult to make dietary changes and improve our eating habits in our own strength – often, we can’t do it with just willpower alone; we need our Lord Jesus Christ to empower us and walk alongside us. So, by understanding the cell theory, asking God’s guidance and eating God’s food – we have the tools to succeed. But we don’t want to become too restrictive around food or set goals that are unachievable that make us miserable.
Not another diet

Food, in moderation, is pleasurable, so eating should still be enjoyable. It is also often a sociable experience and that should not change. Eating natural wholefood is less about diet culture and more about making eating wholefoods part of our daily routine, where we can still enjoy our favourite treats or snacks, just not every day.
As we pray, Lord help us to make healthy food choices, which honour you and are right for my body – let us be reminded of this verse:
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13
If we apply discipline and consistency with an eating plan or approach designed to suit us, healthy eating can be more than a New Year resolution. It can be a reality and a lifestyle choice. And to that I say, Amen.
