Part 1 of the Series: The Search for Meaning in a Noisy World
In a world where achievement is celebrated and applause is craved, many still find themselves quietly haunted by a lingering emptiness. This piece explores that ache beneath the surface, the yearning for something more—something lasting.
Poem
Up again in the morning
Running ahead to start the journey
For the search for meaning
To end the endless yearning
That has left me burning
Working and toiling around in circles
All my efforts ending in shambles
As the void inside increases,
With nothing to decrease it,
Fame, clicks, success, and money
All I thought was the best honey
To the emptiness inside
But alas, the void still resides.
Down again in the night
Tired of chasing things in sight
Still searching hard for insight
Into the meaning of life
The Ache Beneath the Applause
Just like the person speaking above, have you ever felt a void so deep that you feel what’s missing is success, more achievement, to be noticed, to be the centre of attraction—fame, popularity, money, promotion, more religious activities, etc.?
Following after the things you thought were missing with all your heart and effort, then you feel satisfaction and fulfilment just for a few weeks, a few months, and the void returns.
You wonder what’s wrong. You feel that having more views, more clicks will fill the void. But just as you achieve it, you read the comments, see the clicks, and sit alone in the silence of your bed with the emptiness returning in greater force.
When Even Good Things Leave You Empty
You strive for more money yet remain perpetually unsatisfied after acquiring it. You thought charity would be it. Alas, how disappointed you were. You engage in religious activities, but to no avail, to fill the void completely.
The chase continues. The noise from people around you and social media continues to increase as you get to a point of burnout.
You might even have the money, a job, and a brilliant career, but realise that it still does not fill the void.

The Questions That Haunt Us
Eventually, you get to a point where you start asking: is there more to life than money, chasing dreams, fame?
At some point, you inevitably start wondering, what comes after achieving my dreams?
You get tired of chasing shadows and using things to fill the void, and start asking: Is there more to life than these? Could there be something more to life? What am I living for? There should be something more.
Will life just be about having goals, achieving them, feeling happy, then empty, and looking for another goal?
When the applause stops, the lights fade from the stage, the promotion gotten, the success achieved, the body shape you thought would fill the void achieved, the financial stability goal ticked good—when you lie in the quiet of your room and feel a deeper void despite achieving all your dreams and all the things you thought would fill the void—then what next? What becomes of you?
Are We Just Chasing Shadows?
Will the endless pursuit of fleeting things continue to fill the void? Will another desire crop up to fill the void? Is this going to be a perpetual chase after mirages?
Would you find meaning in those achievements? Would you reinforce your mask of happiness and “fulfilling purpose” with philosophical words and a fake smile, or would you seek Him who can truly give you a meaningful life and make you complete?
Reflection Question
Have you ever reached a place in life where everything seemed perfect on the outside, but you still felt empty inside? What did that experience teach you?
Could the answer lie beyond our efforts in someone greater than us?
In Part 2, we’ll explore what it truly means to return to the Source of meaning.
